Exploring Explorers


Exploring Explorers

Lesson Description or Explanation

Students will research an explorer, investigating the explorers travel, why they explorer went, what the explorer discovered, and any other information the students find interesting about their explorer. The students will then create a power point and present their explorer to the class.


Indiana Curricular Standards


5.1.2 Examine accounts of early European explorations of North America, such as the Vikings’ explorations and settlements in Greenland and North America, including accounts of interactions and conflicts between those early European explorers and Indians.
5.2.1 Use the features of informational texts, such as formats, graphics, diagrams, illustrations, charts, maps, and organization, to find information and support understanding. Example: Locate specific information in a social studies textbook by using its organization, sections on different world regions, and textual features, such as headers, maps, and charts.
6.2.1 Identify the structural features of popular media (newspapers, magazines, online information) and use the features to obtain information. Example: Do a keyword search on the Internet to find information for a research report. Use the section headers for a newspaper to locate information for a report on current world events.
6.1.16 Develop and compare timelines that identify major people, events, and developments in the history of individual civilizations and/or countries that comprise Europe and the Americas.

Assessments
Formative/Summative


Students will present their power point with all of the information that they have found. The students will know what information must be on their power point. If the students have and speak the information they will complete the task. I will also be looking at the lay out of the presentation.

Procedure

v Students will form groups of two (Day One)
v Students will select an explorer by way of drawing from a list (Day One)
v Students will began research by using the internet, given information, and books (Day 2-5ish, observe the class to see if more time is needed)
v Once the students have completed their research they will began work on outlining their power point (Day 5 or 6)
v When the outline has been checked, students may begin working on their power point (Day 6-8)
v The students will present their explorer (Day 9)
Differentiated Instruction


ESL
The students can work with a partner. The students could also look at websites that are printed in Spanish.


Challenge/Extend

The students could explore the culture their explorer came from. The students could look more into the background of their explorer rather than just scratching the surface.


Special Needs



Special Needs : The students will be working in pairs. Also, we will have the needed technological resources for the students to work on the computer.
